SINGAPORE: The Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) will be acquiring three Multi-Role Support Ships (MRSS) worth RM2.2bil to provide faster humanitarian and disaster relief.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the MRSS would be a floating support system that would carry food, medical supplies, clothing supplies and utilities to areas affected by disasters.

“The vessel would also have a helicopter pad which would enable flexibility in the deployment of disaster relief supplies to affected areas.

“This way, we will be able to approach disaster stricken areas by berthing the vessel at a port or flying relief supplies to the areas from a nearby anchorage position,” he said.

He was speaking to pressmen after delivering a speech to delegates during the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Asia Security Summit held at the Shangri-La hotel here.

Ahmad Zahid also added that, currently, five ship builders have been accepted from several countries in Europe and Asia for the building of one of the three MRSS.

“The first MRSS will be built in a foreign country while the other two will be built locally,” he said.

He added that several Malaysian experts would also be sent to the chosen country to acquire the knowledge on the construction of the ships.

“These experts will then return to Malaysia and start the building of the remaining two ships there,” he said.

He also commented that the MAF would be conducting humanitarian and disaster relief training focused on civilian protection.

“The training sessions would either be conducted at the MAF peacekeeping training centre or we may set up a dedicated centre specialising in such training,” he said.

This is a percentage game…who gets what and how much?

It took Malaysian shipbuilder more than 7 years to deliver KD Sri Perak and guess how long will it take to deliver the MRRS?

Harapan cerah untuk:

1. Muncul jutawan baru

2. Rekod KD Sri Perak akan dipecahkan

KUALA LUMPUR: The contract for the maintenance and overhaul of the Sukhoi SU-30MKM jet fighters, which was previously awarded to agents or ‘middlemen’ in Malaysia and Russia, has been terminated, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said the maintenance and overhaul of the jet fighters would now be undertaken by a leading local company that carried out maintenance, repair and overhaul works, Airod Sdn Bhd.

“With the measures we are taking, the maintenance and repair costs will be reduced by 50%,” he told reporters after witnessing the signing of the agreement between Crecom Burj Resources Limited and IRKUT Corporation, here Monday.

At the Parliament sitting in March, Zahid had said that the cost to maintain the Sukhoi jet fighters was RM220 million annually.

He said 15 Sukhoi jet fighters had been acquired for the country’s defence inventory while three more units were expected to be acquired very soon.

Zahid said the warranty period for the 15 Sukhoi aircraft had been extended until the remaining units had been acquired. - Bernama

    Dear Fellow Rakyat,

Do you remember our idealist Datuk Idris Jala was saying that we have been spending more than what we can afford. Or simply more than what we need. Whilst it is good that we continue to support humanitarian relief work, we must be sure that this heroic act will not burden the rakyat.

A work barge with DP2 and 250 tonne crane capacity and a helicopter pad suitable to suit Sikorsky S-92 is only about 30 million USD. DP2 enable the barge to stay on course - Dynamic positioning equipped. This barge come with about 200 beds. This was in 2009. Suprise? Wait. This barge was built for a European offshore support service company with offices across the globe by a Telok Panglima Garang based shipyard. This shipyard have built hundreds of patrol boats, ships, workboats etc. FYI, we have many more shipyards and shipbuilders capable of producing this kind of ship.

We have the capability to build these ship on our own. Our government should stop questioning your own rakyat capability. Our shipyards and fabricators have successfully completed ship repairs, ship building and even offshore platform for overseas operations.

2.2 billion is clearly too much. Over inflated. It’s a waste of money.

Mr admin, ahh there you are. Its simple arithmatics. 10% of USD30 million against, say USD200 million. There is a marked difference.

The Telok Panglima Garang shipyard…who are the shareholders? Again this is where tenders are won and lost.

Malaysian politicians want nothing but the best for the armed forces. They always look for ‘kemampuan tertentu’. It is immaterial whether we have the kemampuan to operate or not. That is secondary. The most important is the price…it should be the most expensive.

Last but not least, the ship should have robots as firefighters because RMN firefighters are only good at drills but once it come to real fire, they simply abondon ship.

    Mr OrgKg,

I copy and paste part of your comment “Our Honourable Defence Minister/Honourable Member of maroon beret”

    Mr Admiral Crap,

The Telok Panglima Garang company only had 2 shareholders. This company has another shipyard in middle east. Point is, let’s build it here.
